The Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGIBR) in representation of the Brazilian Internet Community has the honour to host the next ICANN Meeting - at the Hotel Sofitel Rio de Janeiro between March 23 and 27, 2003.

The CGIBR is an entity formed by 12 councilmen named by the Minister of Science and Technology and the Minister of Telecommunications in representation of the Government – including Science and Technology, Telecommunications Regulatory Agency, Trademarks and Patents and Scientific Community and the Private Sector which includes representation of ISP’s, Internet Users, Academy, Business Community, Telecomm Infrastructure, Computing Industry and Cultural/Educational segments.

CGIBR was created in May 1995 to workout the coordination and integration of all Internet initiatives in Brazil as well as the domain names registration and to promote the dissemination of Internet targeting the digital inclusion all around the country.

Brazil is posted as the 10th web hosting country in the world ranking, and is the natural Latin America leader with almost 2 million web hosts.

CGIBR acts in several different fronts in order:
  • To increase and supervise the Internet services development ;
  • To evaluate and recommend technical and operational standards and procedures;
  • To coordinate the assignment of the Brazilian Internet addresses together with the the domain names registration (http://registro.br );
  • To publish Brazilian Internet statistic data about Internet
